VoiceMap alternatives in 2026

VoiceMap is one of the best-rated audio walking tour apps. But it isn't the right fit for every trip. Here are seven alternatives, grouped by what you might want instead.

We make Strolio, which is on this list, so we've stuck to facts from each company's own site and app store pages. Prices are from the US App Store on 15 September 2026, in US dollars.

What VoiceMap does well

It's worth being fair first. VoiceMap tours are written and narrated by people: its site lists "historians, podcasters, novelists, chefs, experienced guides, and passionate locals". Audio plays automatically as you walk, and downloaded tours work offline with an offline map. The website lists 2,292 tours in 86 countries. It rates 4.8 on the US App Store from 3,400 ratings.

People usually look elsewhere for one of these reasons:

  • Cost. Tours are bought one at a time, from $3.99 to $19.99 on the US App Store.
  • No tour where you are, or none that fits your time.
  • You want a museum guide, or a road trip, not a city walk.
  • You want to ask questions instead of only listening.

If you want cheaper or free tours

izi.TRAVEL

A free app where any person or company can publish audio tours, including many museums. Its website claims 30,000 tours in 6,500 cities. Many tours are free; paid tours on the US App Store cost $5.39 to $12.49. Audio plays automatically near attractions, and you can download up to 10 tours for offline use.

The catch: quality varies because anyone can publish, and the Android app shows ads.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Free, with 60 walking and museum tours taken from Rick Steves guidebooks. The audio works offline once downloaded.

The catch: Europe only, and its site says the tours are "up to date as of March 2023".

If you want more cities offline

GPSmyCity

Over 7,000 self-guided walks in more than 1,800 cities, all usable offline. You can browse walks for free and pay to unlock route maps and turn-by-turn directions. On the US App Store, a single city guide costs $4.99 and yearly subscriptions $14.99 or $20.99.

The catch: walks are text-first, with voice guidance after upgrading, and the Android app contains ads.

If you want museums rather than streets

Smartify

A cultural app built with museum partners. You can scan paintings and objects to find out what you're looking at, and buy tours, which cost $0.99 to $3.99 on the US App Store. It covers "hundreds of museums, art galleries, historic places and more".

The catch: it's focused on museums and venues, not city walks.

If you're driving, not walking

Autio

Location-based audio stories told by human narrators, including actors. Its website claims more than 25,000 stories, which play automatically as you travel, and you can download them for areas without signal. It's sold by subscription, for example $19.99 for a year on its "Traveler" plan in the US App Store.

The catch: it's built mainly for road trips, not city walking tours.

If you want a walk built around you

CityTour AI

Choose a city, a length of 45, 90 or 180 minutes, and your interests, and AI builds a route with stops and audio. Tours you own can be downloaded for offline use. It uses credits, from 10 for $2.99 to 120 for $19.99.

The catch: it's very new, and its own FAQ says the AI content is "mostly correct" with "no full guarantee".

Strolio

Our app. You start from where you're standing, say how long you have and what you like, and choose from several routes. Stories play as you reach each stop, and you can ask about anything by typing, by voice or with a photo. Stories are written from documented sources first and labelled as fact, local story or legend. It's free during the beta.

The catch: it needs a data connection, it's a beta installed through TestFlight on iPhone, and there's no library of narrator-recorded tours. If a scripted, human-told tour is what you love about VoiceMap, Strolio is a different kind of app.
